A real “Crusade” was launched this past February against Marco Ferrando, leader of the Asociazione Marxista Revoluzionaria Progetto Comunista, organization that forms part of the Coordinating Committee for The Refoundation of The Fourth International. The goal was to proscribe the candidacy of Comrade Ferrando to the Senate, for the Abruzzo region, in next April 9 elections. La candidacy had been imposed on the slates of the Partito della Rifondazione Comunista as part of the growing role of the minorities in that association, and represented those who have been systematically struggling against the integration of the party with the capitalist left coalition called Unione. Now the Unione is called upon to succeed Berlusconi’s Government and has the support of the big bosses.
In the “Crusade” against Ferrando everybody enrolled themselves, from the fascists associates with the present Government to the centre-left former Stalinist of the previous one, Prime Minister D’Alema. The McCarthyist campaign took as its crux Ferrando’s statements on the right of Iraqi people to armed resistance against the occupiers of their country (among which there are Italian troops), as well as his positions denouncing the artificial and reactionary character of the Israeli State.
The operation, however, had not merely “ideological” purposes. It was about disciplining the left of the Unione to the task the coalition will face once in political power and which precisely implies a general disciplining against the workers and the masses in order to save Italian capitalism in ruins. It must not be forgetten, besides, that the last center-left Italian Government fell when Rifondazione Comunista withdrew its parliamentary support. With the Ferrando proscription, the left-wing of peninsular imperialism is getting ready to govern.
Fausto Bertinotti proceeded to withdraw Ferrando’s candidature, following the fascist campaign and ignoring the statutes of its own organization.
Ferrando and the Asociazione Marxista Revoluzionaria embody, then, a revolutionary tradition. Which we make our own.
